Dr Emily Peppers

Dr Emily Peppers obtained her PhD at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2014. The title of her doctoral dissertation was “Introduction of the viol into sixteenth-century France: perspectives on the cultural integration of musical instruments” (https://era.ed .ac.uk/handle/1842/17977). In October 2021 Emily Peppers, PhD, joined the staff of the Institute of Musicology. Under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships programme (2021–2026) she is currently working on a research project entitled “Musical Materialities and Conduits of Culture: revealing the hidden histories of music during Poland’s ‘Golden Age’ (c. 1475–1600)”. The innovative nature of the project lies in the use of digital technologies, in particular coding analysis and optical character recognition software for archival research.
Emily Peppers’ research interests relate to musical instruments, material musical culture, history of art and cultural transfer. The scholar has almost twenty years’ experience as a museum and heritage specialist in Scotland (independent consultancy positions). The institutions she has worked for include the University of Edinburgh, Musical Instrument Museums Edinburgh, Museums Galleries Scotland and Creative Scotland.
