dr Sylwia Makomaska
Graduate in musicology of the Faculty of History, University of Warsaw (2002) and political science (specialisation: journalism) of Collegium Civitas (2003). In 2008 she obtained her doctoral degree in humanities on the basis of a thesis entitled “The incidence of various types of perfect pitch among young people attending music schools in Poland”, written under the supervision of Prof. dr hab. Andrzej Rakowski. In 2010 she went on a teaching internship at the Centre for International Research on Creativity Learning in Education (CIRCLE) at the Roehampton University in London (tutor: Prof. David J. Hargreaves).
Her research interests are focused on the psychology of music in the broadest sense, particularly taking into account psychoacoustics, cognitive and social psychology of music, as well as interdisciplinary topics concerning the role of music in social communication.
She took part in research projects relating to the perception of musical pitch in collaboration with the Department of Musical Acoustics, Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. In 2013–2018 she was involved in an international project led by Prof. Ken’ichi Miyazaki (Niigata University, Japan) relating to comparative research on absolute pitch in European and Asian countries. In 2017–2021 she was the leader of the research project “‘Acoustic wallpaper’ in the public space – from musique d’ameublement to audio marketing” funded by the National Science Centre (SONATA 12 no. 2016/23/D/HS2/01773).
Since 2013 she has been coordinating the cooperation between the Institute of Musicology and the “Jestem” Foundation, which supports adults with chronic and incurable illnesses.
