In 1979 he completed his studies at the Institute of Musicology, University of Warsaw, under Prof. Zofia Lissa\u2019s supervision. He is also a graduate in Polish studies (master\u2019s thesis under Prof. Andrzej Lam\u2019s supervision) and music theory of the Academy of Music in Warsaw (master\u2019s thesis under Prof. W\u0142odzimierz Koto\u0144ski\u2019s supervision). He has been working at the Institute of Musicology, University of Warsaw, since 1982. In 1984 he held a scholarship from the Italian Government at the Universit\u00e0 di Palermo. In 1986 he was granted a doctoral degree on the basis of a thesis entitled \u201cWork, creative process, perception \u2013 in reflections of selected representatives of the musical avant-garde of the second half of the twentieth century\u201d. In the 1987\/1988 academic year he conducted research on new American music under Leonard B. Meyer at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on a scholarship from the American Council of Learned Societies. In 1994 he obtained a post-doctoral degree on the basis of the thesis \u201cThe origins and development of new music in the United States\u201d. In 1993\u20131998 he conducted a series of lectures on new Polish and American music at the \u00c9cole Normale Sup\u00e9rieure in Paris, Royal Holloway College (University of London) and Universit\u00e9 de Poitiers. In 2003 he held a Paul Sacher Stiftung scholarship in Basel, where he prepared material for the publication of Witold Lutos\u0142awski\u2019s musical writings and notes. In 2012 he became a professor. In 2013 he delivered lectures on Fryderyk Chopin epistolography and Witold Lutos\u0142awski\u2019s music in Sapporo, Tokyo and Osaka. In 2016 he became the director of the Institute of Musicology, University of Warsaw.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2000\u20132015 he was editor-in-chief of <em>Przegl\u0105d Muzykologiczny<\/em> published by the Institute of Musicology, University of Warsaw. In 2009\u20132015 he was active in the board of the Musicological Section of the Polish Composers\u2019 Union. In 2011 he received the annual Polish Composers\u2019 Union Prize for \u201cthe book <em>Jean-Jacques Rousseau\u2019s Music Thought<\/em>, and for translating and editing work which fills acute gaps in the Polish awareness of world culture\u201d. In addition, he is a founding member of the Witold Lutos\u0142awski Society, which in 2013 honoured him with a medal issued to mark the centenary of its patron\u2019s birth. Since 2015 he has been a member of the Programme Committee of Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne (PWM) in Krak\u00f3w.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Zbigniew Skowron\u2019s research interests include the history of the early modern music thought, theoretical and aesthetic aspects of music of the second half of the twentieth century (European and American avant-garde), Witold Lutos\u0142awski\u2019s aesthetic views as well as biography and epistolography of Fryderyk Chopin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">His academic output includes the following books:\u00a0<em>Teoria i estetyka awangardy muzycznej drugiej po\u0142owy XX wieku<\/em> (1989, 2nd edition 2014),\u00a0<em>Nowa muzyka ameryka\u0144ska<\/em>\u00a0(1995, 2nd edition 2012);\u00a0<em>My\u015bl muzyczna Jeana-Jacques\u2019a Rousseau<\/em>\u00a0(2010) \u2013 hailed as the most beautiful book of the year in the humanities during the 51st Competition of the Polish Association of Book Publishers. Zbigniew Skowron has edited a number of collected works:\u00a0<em>Styl i estetyka tw\u00f3rczo\u015bci Witolda Lutos\u0142awskiego<\/em>\u00a0(Krak\u00f3w 2000);\u00a0<em>Lutos\u0142awski Studies<\/em>\u00a0(Oxford 2001),\u00a0<em>Karol Szymanowski w\u00a0perspektywie kultury muzycznej przesz\u0142o\u015bci i\u00a0tera\u017aniejszo\u015bci<\/em>\u00a0(Krak\u00f3w 2007), as well as critical source editions: Witold Lutos\u0142awski,\u00a0<em>Zapiski\u00a0<\/em>(Warsaw 2008);\u00a0<em>Lutos\u0142awski on Music<\/em>\u00a0(Lanham, Maryland 2007), Witold Lutos\u0142awski,\u00a0<em>O\u00a0muzyce.<\/em> <em>Pisma i\u00a0wypowiedzi<\/em>\u00a0(Gda\u0144sk 2012) and \u2013 together with Zofia Helman and\u00a0Hanna Wr\u00f3blewsk\u0105-Straus \u2013\u00a0<em>Korespondencja Fryderyka Chopina<\/em>, vol.\u00a01, 1816\u20131831 (Warsaw 2009).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition, he has translated English, French, German and Italian books on the aesthetics of music, musical historiography and Chopin: Enrico Fubini,\u00a0<em>Historia estetyki muzycznej<\/em>\u00a0(Krak\u00f3w 1998); Jeana-Jacques Eigeldinger,\u00a0<em>Fryderyk Chopin.<\/em> <em>Szkice do metody gry fortepianowej<\/em>\u00a0(Krak\u00f3w 1995, 2nd edition 2010), idem,\u00a0<em>Chopin w oczach swoich uczni\u00f3w<\/em>\u00a0(Krak\u00f3w 2000, 2nd edition 2010); William G. Atwood,\u00a0<em>Paryskie \u015bwiaty Fryderyka Chopina<\/em>\u00a0(Krak\u00f3w 2005); Carl Dahlhaus,\u00a0<em>Estetyka muzyki\u00a0<\/em>(Warsaw 2007), idem,\u00a0<em>Podstawy historii muzyki\u00a0<\/em>(Warsaw 2010); Marie-Paule Rambeau,\u00a0<em>Chopin w \u017cyciu i tw\u00f3rczo\u015bci George Sand<\/em>\u00a0(Krak\u00f3w 2009).
